Rhode Island

The Ocean State

America’s smallest state still packs a punch in great destinations for the traveler. It’s 400 miles of sandy shores and seaside colonial towns are ideal for sailing and relaxation. Newport is a cool city where the gilded age wealthy built opulent mansions as summer retreats. The Cliff Walk, International Tennis Hall of Fame and Rose Island lighthouse are favorite sites. Providence, the capital, is known for its gondola rides on the Providence river, culinary museum, Roger Williams Park Zoo and Waterfire Art Festival. Narragansett Bay is full of historic islands and bays as well as Newport bridge. The southern coast from Wakefield to Watch Hill offers idyllic country drives and quiet beaches. Bristol is home to the Blithewold mansion, Herreshoff Marine Museum and America’s Cup Hall of Fame. Block Island off the southern coast features Mohegan bluffs and Crescent beach.
